Dry Eye
Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in symptoms of discomfort, blurred vision, and tear film instability with potential damage to the front surface of the eye.
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is the most common cause of dry eye. Meibomian glands are glands in your eyelids which slowly release oil into the tear film. This oil helps to stop your tears from evaporating, hence helping to prevent dry eye. In MGD, the oil becomes thicker and blocks these glands, leading to increased evaporation of tears and dry eye.
At Milburn and Neill we offer a comprehensive range of treatment for dry eye. We are in the heart of Dunedin and service the surrounding Otago region. Treatment for dry eyes may be as simple a preservative free lubricating eye drops to IPL therapy. We also offer meibomian gland expression, prescriptions for therapeutic agents, scleral contact lenses and amniotic membrane therapy. A few recent additions to our offerings include Zest lid treatments and Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) with red, blue, yellow and infra-red settings available. Often patients present to us after trying a pharmacy full of lubricants. The number of drops and ingredients continue to increase. We will support and educate you to manage your signs and symptoms. E > Eye IPL
The E>Eye is an IPL device specifically designed for the treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). It uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) applied to the skin around the eyes to stimulate the meibomian glands to return them to their normal function. IPL is one of the most long-lasting treatment options for MGD.
A recent University of Auckland study which investigated the effects of a course of IPL treatment using the E>Eye device showed significantly improved symptoms and improved meibomian gland function.
