Considerations and Our Position on this technology

Smart glasses and privacy: the conversation worth having

Technology is exciting. Respecting others is essential.

Meta AI smart glasses look much like conventional eyewear, but some models contain cameras, microphones and AI-powered features. That creates new possibilities — and responsibilities.

We believe customers should understand both the benefits and the social implications before choosing smart glasses.

What are the main concerns?

People may not realise they are being recorded.

Because smart glasses can look like ordinary glasses, a person nearby may not immediately recognise that a photo or video is being captured.

Personal conversations deserve privacy.

Recording audio or video in private settings can make people uncomfortable and may breach their expectations of privacy or applicable rules.

AI and personal information need careful consideration.

Depending on how features are used, information may be processed through connected apps or online services. Customers should understand the device settings, account requirements and relevant data policies.

Not every environment is appropriate.

Workplaces, healthcare settings, schools, changing rooms, cinemas and other venues may prohibit or restrict camera-equipped devices.

How can these concerns be managed?

We recommend a simple approach:

Be transparent, ask permission and think before you capture.

- Tell people when you are recording. Do not rely solely on the indicator light to communicate your intentions.
- Ask before filming others. This is especially important in private conversations, social gatherings and situations involving children.
- Respect a no. If someone is uncomfortable being recorded, stop recording and respect their wishes.
- Keep private spaces private. Avoid recording in changing rooms, bathrooms and other places where people reasonably expect privacy.
- Check the rules. Follow workplace policies, venue restrictions and applicable New Zealand law.
- Understand your settings. Review app permissions, connected accounts, storage and sharing options. Avoid uploading or sharing sensitive material unnecessarily.
- Never try to bypass privacy safeguards. Keep recording indicators unobstructed and use the glasses as intended.

What about the recording light?

Compatible Meta AI glasses include a visible capture indicator designed to signal when the camera is capturing content. On supported newer models, safeguards can disable the camera if the indicator is blocked or tampered with.

However, a light cannot replace informed communication or consent. People may not notice it, understand what it means or be comfortable being recorded.

Responsible use starts with the wearer.

Our position

We support technology that genuinely improves everyday life, and we believe it should be used thoughtfully.

Smart glasses are not just another accessory. They introduce a new way of capturing and interacting with the world, and that comes with a responsibility to respect the people around us.

We encourage our customers to enjoy the convenience, creativity and connectivity of Meta AI smart glasses while making privacy and consideration part of the experience.
